Partygate: Boris Johnson 'facing more fines' over lockdown breaches

Prime Minister Boris Johnson could receive further police fines over breaching lockdown restrictions, according to reports.

Earlier this week, it was confirmed both Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak would receive a fixed penalty notice from the Metropolitan Police for attending an event which broke the rules put in place during the pandemic.

While members of the Cabinet have supported the prime minister, Conservative peer Lord David Wolfson yesterday resigned as a justice minister, criticising the response to "repeated rule-breaking".

But according to reports in a number of newspapers, the prime minister could be facing up to three more fines for lockdown breaches.

According to a report in The Guardian, events that police are still to investigate, which Johnson attended, include the May 2020 summer party, a November gathering in Johnson’s flat with his wife on the day of Dominic Cummings’ departure, and a leaving do for Lee Cain, a senior aide, in No 10 a day later.

Making an apology earlier this week, the prime minister said the public "had a right to expect better".

In a televised statement broadcast from Chequers, he added: "[But] now I feel an even greater sense of obligation to deliver on the priorities of the British people."

The Metropolitan Police had earlier confirmed it would issue around 30 more fines to attendees at lockdown-breaking events in government premises during the early stages of the pandemic.

Around 20 fixed penalty notices were issued last month as part of Operation Hillman, when the Met indicated that these would not be the last.
