David Cameron has announced he will step down after Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, to make way for his successor Theresa May.
May is the only remaining candidate in the Conservative leadership race after Andrea Leadsom stood down earlier. Cameron said there was “no longer” any need “for a long period of transition”.

May will be in Downing Street by Wednesday evening, he said, after he has visited Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation.
“I’m also delighted Theresa May will be the next Prime Minister. She is strong, she is confident, she is more than able to provide the leadership our country is going to need in the years ahead, and she will have my full support,” he said.
