Stephen Barclay named as new Brexit Secretary

Stephen Barclay has been appointed as the new Brexit Secretary while Amber Rudd returns to cabinet as the new Work and Pensions Secretary.

Rudd served as Home Secretary between 2016 and 2018, before being forced to resign less than seven months ago after admitting he had she "inadvertently misled" MPs over targets for removing illegal immigrants following the Windrush scandal.

Her appointment follows criticism of the DWP, with the department under fire following the introduction of Universal Credit. A remain supporter, Rudd is seen as a close ally of the Prime Minister.

Theresa May announced the appointments after Dominic Raab and Esther McVey quit the cabinet in protest over the UK Government’s approach to Brexit.

Barclay, who will take on responsibility for Department for Exiting the European Union, is MP for North East Cambridgeshire and a supporter of leaving the EU.

The former director at Barclays Bank has previously served as City minister and a whip at the Treasury.
