Pro-union campaign group 'taking legal advice' over Natalie McGarry's holocaust denial claim

Pro-union campaign group 'taking legal advice' over Natalie McGarry's holocaust denial claim

A pro-union campaign group has said it is “taking legal advice” after MP Natalie McGarry wrongly claimed its leader was an “outed holocaust denier”.

McGarry, who was elected as an SNP MP but now sits as an independent, posted a tweet saying: “Leading unionist figures do know that “Scotland in Union” is headed by an internet troll and an outed holocaust denier, right?”

The campaign replied to McGarry’s tweet calling it an “unfounded claim" against the leader of the organisation, management consultant Alastair Cameron. She has since apologised and deleted the tweet from her account.

A spokesman for Scotland in Union said: "We are surprised that an elected member of parliament would make such a false and offensive accusation. We will be taking legal advice before responding formally to Ms McGarry."

The Glasgow East MP was elected on an SNP ticket last May but withdrew the party whip last November, following a Police Scotland investigation into alleged financial discrepancies involving donations to Women for Independence (WFI), of which she was a co-founder.

McGarry denied any suggestion of impropriety but said she had stepped down to avoid the issue distracting from her work as an MP.
