Operation Branchform investigation into SNP ‘ongoing’

The Operation Branchform investigation into the SNP’s finances is still ongoing, the chief constable has said.

Speaking to Sky News, Jo Farrell was unable to say when the probe would come to an end.

But she confirmed former first minister Nicola Sturgeon is still under investigation, as is former SNP treasurer Colin Beattie MSP.

Operation Branchform was launched in July 2021. Sturgeon and Beattie were arrested and questioned last year before being released without charge.

Peter Murrell, the former SNP chief executive and husband of Sturgeon, is the only individual to have been charged in relation to the investigation.

Murrell was arrested in April 2023 for questioning and was released without charge, but was arrested again in May this year and charged with embezzlement.

Police Scotland submitted a report to the Crown Office later in May. Lawyers at the Crown Office decide whether the case goes to court, including determining whether there is enough evidence.

Asked for an update on the probe, Farrell said: “That inquiry is ongoing.”

And pressed on whether Operation Branchform was close to ending, she said: “It’s on ongoing investigation, I’m not going to comment on that now.”

On handling the political impact of the investigation, she said: “We have operational independence and we police without fear or favour, and without any political interference.”
