No agreement between Theresa May and Nicola Sturgeon over Brexit

No agreement between Theresa May and Nicola Sturgeon over Brexit

Downing Street

Nicola Sturgeon emerged from a 40 minute meeting with Prime Minister Theresa May to say there had been no agreement about Scotland's role in the Brexit process.

The First Minister visited Downing Street in the first meeting between the two leaders since March.

The relationship has been strained amid a deadlock over how much influence the Scottish Government should have in negotiations with Europe, whether Scotland can have its own arrangements for immigration and trade, and the devolution of powers repatriated from Brussels.

Sturgeon said the latest meeting had been "constructive and cordial" but had "not yet" led to an agreement on any of the issues.

"We developed a better understanding of each other's positions, and I made clear that the Scottish government wants to find agreement on the withdrawal bill," she said.

"We oppose Brexit, but we understand withdrawal legislation is necessary, so we want to find agreement.

"But I also made clear what our bottom lines are on that bill, so discussions will continue and hopefully we can reach some points of agreement in the weeks to come."

A spokesman for Number 10 said: "The Prime Minister encouraged the Scottish Government to continue to work with counterparts to secure the best outcome for the people of Scotland and the whole of the UK."

Sturgeon has previously called meetings between the two "very frustrating".

Labour's Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland, Lesley Laird said: “Scotland is stuck between two obstinate governments, neither working in the best interests of the nation. Today’s meeting underlines that sad reality."
