Nicola Sturgeon holds talks with London mayor

Nicola Sturgeon has said the new London Mayor Sadiq Khan will help her government create a “stronger working relationship” between the UK capital and Scotland.

The First Minister made the remarks after she had an introductory meeting with the Labour politician in London today.   

Sturgeon said she and Khan discussed topics such as the importance of building economic links between Scotland and London, as well as the forthcoming EU referendum.

Sturgeon said that her government would be able to have a positive relationship Khan, who won the mayoral election for Labour on 5 May, after eight years of Tory rule in London.     

She said: “I was pleased to meet Sadiq Khan early in his tenure as the new London Mayor.

“He has a wealth of experience behind him and it is clear to me that he will bring fresh ideas for developing a stronger working relationship between London and Scotland.

“I want to see our links with London strengthened and we will be opening a new hub for the Scottish Government and our agencies to build better business links in London later this year.

“There is also an opportunity for us to share experiences in areas of policy such as education and in improving transport connections.

“One area where we have shared interest is the importance of remaining in the European Union for both or our economies. Membership of the EU has been good for the prosperity and wellbeing of everyone across our country and plays a crucial role in the success of our financial services and international export industries.

“I look forward to developing our stronger ties.”
