New initiative to boost cybersecurity awareness in schools

A new programme aims to boost online safety awareness across Scottish schools in a bid to tackle cybercrime.

Delivered by information technology consultant Stellar Omada in partnership with Heart of Midlothian Innovation Centre, the Cyber Security Escape Room initiative will see small groups of secondary school students work together to tackle simulated cybersecurity scenarios.

Stellar Omada’s Founder and Managing Director Colin Frame said: “Like many people, I am continually alarmed at the spread of cyber crime and its impact not only on the business world, but also how it impacts society and young people in particular.  We hope this initiative with Hearts can provide a blueprint for further activity in this important area.”

Created by the consultant’s Elevate division - a digital technology education programme - the initiative will take place from 9-11 December and is expected to take on more than 200 pupils from across Edinburgh.

The new programme will launch as the Online Safety Act comes into force across the UK. In October, Ofcom announced a timeline for the implementation of the act adding 2025 would be a “pivotal year” for building and online. The regulator warned social media firms it would “come down hard” on those who fail to comply with the law.

It also comes two weeks after the gaming platform Roblox was forced to indroduce additional safety features, after it was accused of putting children's safety at risk by US investment firm Hindenburg Research.

The platform with a user base mostly made of under 16s, expanded its existing parental controls, and banned those under the age of 13 from directly and privately messaging others.

Ann Park, director of community and partnership at Heart of Midlothian Innovation Centre, said: “We are acutely aware of the increasing dangers faced online by young people and welcome this forward-thinking initiative.  Stellar Omada’s Escape Room concept is a highly engaging way that will help learners gain a deeper awareness of the threats posted by cybercrime, cat fishing, and grooming, and equip them with vital skills to keep them safe online.”

Launched in 2019, the innovation centre helps more than 2000 young people every year improve their technology skills, via free courses across a range of disciplines including coding, app development, and robotics.
