Labour MPs attack Jeremy Corbyn after reshuffle
Jeremy Corbyn has been publicly attacked by fellow Labour MPs after a shadow cabinet reshuffle which took nearly 36 hours.
Announced just after midnight, the reshuffle saw only two shadow ministers sacked in the end, Shadow Culture Secretary Michael Dugher and Shadow Europe Minister Pat McFadden.
However several high profile MPs, including nine members of the front bench team itself, took to twitter to call the decision “vindictive”, labelling Corbyn “insecure and intolerant”.
Dugher, who had written a lengthy article in the New Statesman criticising the leader, told Sky News yesterday: “I think I tried to do my best in delivering some straight talking and honest politics, and I think it was a little too much for him, which is a shame.
“The truth is, I think the real casualty today has been the ‘new politics’ that we were all promised four months ago by Jeremy.”
Hilary Benn, who had been tipped to be replaced after speaking out for air strikes in Syria, remains as Shadow Foreign Secretary.
Corbyn’s 115 days as Labour leadership have been characterised by fierce criticism from his own MPs.
Emily Thornberry, who like Corbyn is a London MP and opposed to the replacement of the Trident nuclear defence system, has been installed as Shadow Defence Secretary.
Labour's frontbench team now has 17 women and 14 men.
