John Swinney considering social media ban for under-16s

First Minister John Swinney has said he is considering following Australia’s move, and banning social media for those under 16.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, Swinney said there are “strong arguments” for the ban, and he has discussed the policy with the Labour UK Government.

Online safety is a reserved matter, and last month technology secretary Peter Kyle said a ban was “on the table”.

Swinney said: “The Scottish Government will look at the measures that are necessary to tackle the effects, the negative effects, that came come from social media on young people."

He added: "It's vital that we are alert and aware of the potential threats that can exist, whilst acknowledging that there are many benefits of social media activity."

Two weeks ago, the Australian Parliament approved the world's strictest laws on children’s use of social media by banning those under 16 from holding accounts.

Once it comes into effect, the ban will see platforms such as TikTok, Facebook and X fined up to AU$50m  – around £25m – for failing to follow the law.

Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese said the legislation was needed to protect young people from the "harms" of social media.
