Humza Yousaf releases video message from mother-in-law trapped in Gaza

Humza Yousaf has released a video message from his mother-in-law, trapped in Gaza, as he urges the international community to bring an end to the "collective punishment" of the Palestinian people.

Elizabeth El-Nakla is the mother of Yousaf's wife, Dundee councillor Nadia El-Nakla.

The retired nurse travelled to Gaza before the Hamas attack with her husband Maged, El-Nakla's father, to visit family members.

Yousaf has told how he had not slept for two days after his relatives became one of millions trapped in Gaza as Israeli forces attacked in the wake of the devastating attacks by Hamas on its people.

The Israeli government has told all those living in north Gaza to move south within 24 hours as bombing continues.

Food, water, electricity and other supplies have already been cut off and Yousaf told how he did not know whether his family would "make it through the night".

In a message posted on social media, grandmother Elizabeth said: "This will be my last video. Everybody from Gaza is moving towards where we are - one million people; no food, no water and still they're bombing them as they leave.Where are we going to put them?

"But my thought is, all these people in the hospital cannot be evacuated. Where is humanity? Where's people's hearts in the world to let this happen in this day and age?

"May God help us. Goodbye."

Yousaf said: "[The] UN has said the order to move 1.1 million people in 24 hours will lead to 'devastating humanitarian consequences'. The international community must step up and demand an end to collective punishment.

"Enough. There can be no justification for the death of innocent men, women and children."
