Holyrood to review MSP code of conduct amid sexual harassment complaints

Holyrood to review MSP code of conduct amid sexual harassment complaints

Recent allegations of sexual harassment and abuse at Holyrood has led to an inquiry into the code of conduct within parliament and complaint making process.

Rules governing the reporting and investigation of sexual harassment complaints against MSPs are to be reviewed by Holyrood’s Standards Committee.

Clare Haughey, the committee convener, said: “Our procedures need to make clear that complaints will be taken seriously, and people will be treated fairly.  Our review of the code of conduct will examine the culture here at Holyrood and seek to ensure there is confidence in our rules and procedures.”

The inquiry remit will include an examination of regulation and guidance regarding the complaints process to ensure complaints are treated in a serious, confidential, and fair manner.

An understanding of cultural and societal factors relating to sexual harassment will also be examined to further appropriate changes.

A helpline was launched in Holyrood to assist members to report sexual abuse cases. The helpline received four calls within three days of becoming active earlier this month.
