Heather Anderson to replace Alyn Smith as SNP MEP until Brexit
Heather Anderson will replace Alyn Smith as SNP MEP for Scotland in the European Parliament.
Smith, who had been an MEP for 15 years, has stood down after being elected MP for Stirling in last week’s general election.
Anderson is currently deputy leader of the SNP group on Scottish Borders Council.
She is also an organic farmer with an organic farm shop and butchery.
Anderson was placed fifth on the SNP list in the European elections in June, but Christian Allard and Aileen MacLeod, who were second and third on the list were also elected as MEPs in June and fourth placed Margaret Ferrier has just become an MP.
The UK Government has to formally nominate the replacement MEP, but the SNP will put forward Anderson and she has indicated she is willing to take up the position.
She tweeted: “Ready to serve and to ensure Scotland’s distinctive voice is loudly heard right up to the point when we are dragged out of Europe against our democratic will. Awaiting instructions”.
