Sir Peter Housden has been appointed chair of an exclusive club in London for civil servants and their families.

The former permanent secretary to the Scottish Government, who retired in 2015, is the new chairman of the Civil Service Club in Whitehall.

The club provides facilities for civil servants working in or visiting London and hosts informal meetings and private functions.

Housden replaces John Whittaker CBE, who died earlier this year.

Sir Peter said: “The Civil Service Club is an important part of the landscape of Whitehall, offering a friendly and informal setting to enjoy good food and drink, a lively events programme and excellent overnight accommodation.

“It is a real privilege to have this opportunity to work with the Committee and General Manager David Rowberry to help take the Club forward.”

The club’s honorary secretary Martin Klaassen said Housden has been “a member and regular user of the Club for a number of years”.
