Edinburgh College guarantees a place for all school leavers in Lothians

Every school leaver in the Lothians is guaranteed a place at Edinburgh College under a new applications process launched by the college.

Applicants will be assisted in finding a course which fits their level of learning and skillset.

The offer applies to full time courses starting in August, including practical and access courses.

The move is being welcomed by schools in the region.

Annette Bruton, who was appointed principal last year, said the college had a responsibility as the only college in the area. “The college already has courses to suit most levels but, where people don’t have the qualifications needed for a certain level of study, we’re looking at how we can shape our curriculum to make sure everyone has a good entry point into education at the right level for them.

“We’ve worked really closely with schools to learn what their students need and make sure no one misses out. We have a responsibility to the young people in our communities and we’re confident this will give them what they need to succeed,” she said.

Michael McGee, head of St. Augustine’s RC High School in Edinburgh, said the school supported the initiative.

“At St. Augustine’s we are working on developing Scotland’s young workforce. This new guarantee is ensuring that every young person will continue lifelong learning to help them in their chosen career pathway.”

Edinburgh College was formed from the merger of Stevenson, Telford and Jewel & Esk colleges in 2012, making it the only college in the city. In 2014 the college undertook a £1.7m cost-cutting exercise including the axing of 70 jobs.
