Dundee Waterfront crowned Scotland’s best place
Dundee Waterfront has been voted the best place in Scotland in a national planning competition.
Scotland’s Best Places initiative was organised by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Scotland, in conjunction with Scottish Government and Barton Willmore, to celebrate RTPI’s centenary.
The idea was to identify places across Scotland which have been built, enhanced or protected by planners and the planning system within Scotland since 1914. Janet Askew, vice president of RTPI, said: “I am delighted that so many people have taken time to vote and I congratulate Dundee Waterfront on being named Scotland’s Best Place.
“It’s great that this competition has caught the imagination of people across the country.
“The Royal Town Planning Institute promotes the view that planning is a positive thing that works to make places that people feel proud of so hopefully this has shown what planning is all about.”
Following a public call for suggestions, 55 places were nominated and it attracted over 3,700 votes from people across Scotland. Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and the West Highland Way were second and third respectively.
Stephen Tucker, convener of RTPI Scotland and partner at Barton Willmore, said: “On launching the new National Planning Framework for Scotland, Planning Minister Derek Mackay talked about the importance of leadership in helping us to create great places for people across Scotland.”
