Conservative MP Jamie Wallis found guilty of three traffic offences after crash

Bridgen MP Jamie Wallis has been found guilty of failing to stop, failing to report an accident and leaving a vehicle in a dangerous position following a crash near Cowbridge in South Wales in November 2021.

The Conservative MP, who was first elected in 2019, had denied the charges, but was found guilty of the three charges on Monday following a trial at Cardiff Magistrates' Court. He was found not guilty of driving without due care and attention.

He has been disqualified from driving for six months and fined £2,500.

Wallis, who is the first openly trans MP, said his car hit a lamppost as he tried to avoid a cat.

"A cat ran out from left to right in front of me. I just instinctively swerved. I didn't think about it. I just swerved to avoid the cat. That's when the collision happened," Wallis said in a statement.

"It was the worst accident that I have been involved in. It was quite powerful."

The court heard he left the scene of the crash wearing a black leather mini-skirt and high heels, and said he feared being "raped, killed or kidnapped".

In February, Wallis was handed a £270 fine and given three points on his licence after he admitted the offence of crossing a solid white line while driving in August 2021.
