Care Inspectorate chief is new Edinburgh College principal

Edinburgh College board have appointed a new principal, Annette Bruton, who is currently chief executive of the Care Inspectorate.

Scotland’s biggest Further Education College, which was formed by the merger of Stevenson, Telford and Jewel & Esk in 2012, saw its previous principal, Mandy Exley, resign in October. Interim principal Elaine McMahon said: “Since the merger, Edinburgh College has taken significant steps forward and I am delighted that Annette will take the college on this exciting new journey; she is an outstanding choice.”

Despite boasting high post-study employment rates and high inspection rates, last year the college undertook a £1.7m cost-cutting exercise including the axing of 70 jobs. It is hoped the new principal will lead the institution to long-term growth.

Bruton started her career as a geography teacher before moving into learning support and special education, then inspection. She said:“I am honoured to take up this post and look forward to meeting new colleagues, both staff and students.

 “Edinburgh College plays a pivotal role in the life of the capital and well beyond. Its links with schools, universities and employers give real meaning to lifelong learning and empower thousands of students with new skills each year.

“Having dedicated most of my career to education at all levels, I look forward to making a further contribution to providing high-quality learning and the opportunities that gives to the whole community and the economy of our region.”
