Brexit whistleblower to present evidence

The whistleblower who accused Vote Leave of breaking campaign spending rules will today present evidence he says supports his claims.

Pro-Brexit activist Shahmir Sanni says the official Brexit campaign funnelled £625,000 to a satellite group called BeLeave to avoid strict spending limits.

But his allegations have been dismissed as "utterly ludicrous" by Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, one of the key players in the Vote Leave campaign.

Sanni's lawyers are due to present his evidence at a news conference in London this afternoon.

"It's quite literally a matter of democracy and it's up to the people of this country to have a look at the evidence themselves and decide for themselves whether the allegations are false or true," he told BBC News.

"Lawyers are looking at the evidence and [have] said there is reasonable ground and so they are going to be presenting their recommendations to MPs."

Elsewhere the Times reports that Theresa May will today decide the fate of her political secretary Stephen Parkinson, who was Sanni's partner at the time of the campaign.

Parkinson, who was a top official at Vote Leave, is accused of directing how money should be spent by BeLeave, where Sanni was working.

He denies any wrongdoing during the campaign and insists he only offered Sanni "advice and encouragement".
